Poor Ohioans Are Having Trouble Affording Food.
The NPR website has an article about two women, a 40-year old mother and her 19-year old daughter. The Nunezes are unemployed and receive government assistance like food stamps and subsidized housing. They rely on their monthly $367 Social Security check and food stamps worth $102. The mother has never worked outside the home all her life, and it seems like the 19-year old cannot find a stable job. With no car, their options are very limited. See their budget here.
When I read their story, I was torn between pity and contempt. I cannot imagine having to make do with so little. Yet I also cannot imagine not trying to find a job to try to better my and my family’s situation. They live in a neighborhood comprised of people in similar situation — jobless and on government assistance. I was appalled to read that people around them have advised that the daughter ought to get pregnant so that they can get more money from the government. I was flabbergasted at the thought process of these people. Let’s bring in another mouth to feed so the government pays us more!
It seems that it isn’t just money that is lacking in their circle of friends, but common sense as well.

Jul 19, 08 at 4:18 pmMultiply this by tens of thousands and you get some idea of the sorry shape this country is in……….there are glimmers of hope on the horizon, people are driving less and soon they will have to have Victory Gardens a la WWII. A massive shakedown could happen, it always has in the past, and most likely will be unpleasant for a lot of people, such as the Nunez’, maybe they could get along better if they returned to Mexico, just a thought, but if enough of them went back, they could try to change that system to make it a little more like what they seem to be used to…………

It _is_ rather frustrating to be working our tails off while others get to sit around and get a handout. But speaking as a broke person, I’d rather be working my tail off than be on welfare! I guess it’s just a matter of pride.
