FREE Microsoft Courses for Techies

thumbnail-free-stuffI am a techie, so I understand the necessity to be on top of the game.  One has to keep learning about new technologies, new methods, new acronyms in order to keep up.  I also know that it can be expensive.

As part of my “earn more” strategy I am going after some professional certifications.  I discovered last year that I have the passion and talent for database programming, so I am hoping to get certified on SQL this year.  As I surf the web looking for practice exams for 70-431 I came across some free e-Learning courses that Microsoft is offering.  It covers a multitude of topics:  SQL, Visual Studio, MIcrosoft Office, etc.  I thought I’d share this link for fellow techies and techie wannabes.

FREE Full-Version Games for Download

thumbnail-free-stuff

Indulging in some form of harmless escapism is necessary once in a while just to give one’s mind a break.  I usually play computer games, usually online.  The kids are quite adept at finding downloadable games.  For a while our computer was cluttered with all these Free Trial downloads.  Now that they are older, the kids know that downloading Free Trial games are not worth the time, the disk space and the frustration when the trial is over just when things got interesting.  We only download full version games now, and if they are free, the better!

Well, what Amazon.com is offering are full versions of three FREE games:

  • Build-A-Lot
  • Jewel Quest II
  • The Scruffs

The original Jewel Quest was one of my most favorite games.  I actually bought the mobile version and played it on my cell phone a lot.  Jewel Quest II is a fancier, improved version of it.  I have tried Jewel Quest II on the XBOX 360 and online and the graphics are so much better compared to the original.

I have never tried either Build-A-Lot or The Scruffs, but I downloaded them as well.  I am looking forward to playing these games this weekend!

Get FREE games here.

What is your favorite computer game?

FREE Relationship Saver: PMS Reminder to Men

pms

A post at TMZ.com cracked me up.

A website is now providing a service to men to remind them when the women in their lives are scheduled to have PMS.  The service is FREE and you can track up to five women.  Women can also sign up to send alerts to the people in their lives.

The site is PMSBuddy.com.  Their motto:  “Saving relationships one month at a time.”

For the menfolk, the site aims  “to keep you aware of when your wife, girlfriend, mother, sister, daughter, or any other women in your life are closing in on “that time of the month” – when things can get intense for what may seem to be no reason at all.”  For the ladies, the site is “a great way to give people in your life a heads-up of when you might be feeling a bit irritable without having an awkward conversation.”

Not only does the site send out reminders,  it also sends out advice on how to deal with, or survive, the PMS stage.  You can even read PMS-related stories here.

I’m thinking about signing up to send alerts to hubby and the kids!  That way hubby will know when to turn the speakers waaay down, and the kids will clean up after themselves without being told.  :-)

FREE Photos for Your Blog or Website

thumbnail-free-stuffI recently stumbled upon FreeDigitalPhotos.net,  a website with tons of free images that one can use for blogs, websites, even school projects!  The free images are web-ready at 640 pixels x 427 pixels.  I consider this a medium-quality web-ready photo.  No, this will not be an ideal resolution to use for desktop wallpaper.  However, you may buy larger and higher resolution versions of the photo if you desire.

Here is what I love about the site:

  • No registration is required.
  • You may use the images for commercial purposes.
  • You can download the images instantly!

Here are their  main categories for the photos:

  • Animals
  • Celebration
  • Everyday Items
  • Food and Drink
  • Natural World
  • People
  • Places
  • Plants
  • Sports and Leisure
  • Transportation
  • Uncategorized

Each main category has several sub-categories.  For the Natural World category, for example, the sub-categories are:

  • Agriculture and Farming
  • Coastals and Oceans
  • Fall – Autumn
  • Landscapes
  • Sky
  • Summer
  • Spring
  • Sunset and Sunrise
  • Waterfalls
  • Weather
  • Winter

All they are asking is that you display a link to their site from your own website or blog, and give them credit when you use their photos in print.

1,000 FREE Fonts For Windows & Mac

free-fontTired of the off-the-shelf Windows or Mac fonts?  Grab some free fonts at 1001freefonts.com.  Here are just a few of their font categories:

  • 3D
  • Calligraphy
  • Decorative
  • Graffiti
  • Handwriting
  • Medieval
  • Old English
  • Typewriter

To install the free font, click on the appropriate button:  Download Win Font or Download Mac Font.  A small pop-up will prompt you to Open or Save.  I do not have a Mac so anything beyond this is for Windows users only.

Click Open then Extract All Files to a destination folder that is easy for you to remember.  Frankly, I put all my downloaded stuff to my Desktop first and move it somewhere else later.

Next, go to the Control Panel (Start -> Control Panel).  If you have Vista, change the folder view to Classic View.  In the Control Panel folder click on Fonts

Right click anywhere in the opened Fonts folder and click Install Fonts.  If you saved the font on your Desktop go to C:\Users, then to whatever your username is, and then Desktop.

The font installer will list the fonts available for installation from that folder.  Highlight the fonts and Install.

You should be able to use your fonts from within Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Publisher, and any other editor that uses the Windows fonts!

Get Legally FREE MP3′s For Your MP3 Player

This past Christmas was quite a desperate time for retailers, who tried their best to entice shoppers to part with their money by offering them deep discounts.  One of the most popular electronic purchases was an MP3 player.  Did you get one?  What kind did you get?  Did you get a great deal?

I did not have much money for gifts this year and told the kids so.  They are wonderful, understanding kids and for that I am thankful.  They only got one item this year:  an MP3 player.  Now they are busy ripping CD’s and downloading MP3′s.  Luckily, there are tons of legally available FREE MP3′s from digital download sites, and you can listen to snippets of the songs before you download them.

A note of caution about file-sharing websites:  the file-sharing service is legal, but sharing copyrighted files (such as songs and movies) on these legal file-sharing websites is still illegal.  Know the difference.

As of this morning, Amazon.com has 684 FREE MP3′s available for download.  If you sort the list by “Bestselling”, most of the songs in the top 25 are geared towards the holidays but that is just because of the season.  Browse through the list.  You might find an old favorite artist with a new song, or an entirely new favorite artist.

FREE Financial Software – Quicken Online

My new year’s resolution is to no longer be broke in America in 2009, and one of the steps towards that direction is to keep track of my finances better.  The late fees and insufficient fund fees were bleeding me financially, and I just got so tired of juggling the bills. The insanity has to stop.  I am not any good with paper, so I had to find a software that will help me do that.

It is past midnight and I had been asleep for over two hours when I was woken up and felt the urge to go online and search for Quicken.  This is very strange in itself as I know what Quicken is and where to get it, and had no reason to Google it at all.  The first website displayed by Google was Intuit’s Quicken site, and lo and behold, the word “FREE” caught my eye.  “Quicken Online – Now FREE”, it screamed.  I had to check for more information to make sure it wasn’t free only for the trial period.  As far as I know, it is not a trial account and there doesn’t seem to be any hidden charges.  If you have evidence that it isn’t so, please let me know!

So I signed up, all the while expecting to be accosted with “Aha! Now here’s the catch!”  So far I haven’t encountered any.  What freaked me out was it asked for the login and password of my bank account, and I had to make sure that I was still on Intuit’s Quicken website by checking the URL.  Once I provided that, Quicken contacted my bank’s server and loaded all my transactions.  Just like that, everything was in place.

I am excited with the Quicken Online.  I love that I can access it from any computer with internet connectivity.  It seems easy to use, and it has financial tools for budgeting and setting up financial goals.  I was also pleasantly surprised that Quicken Online comes with Quicken Beam, a beta service that sends alerts to your mobile phone.  It can send you your account balance, your last 5 transactions, when your balance dips below your set amount, etc.

If you have never used a financial tracking software before, now is a great time to start.  Get your free Quicken Online account now!
